The way around that is to scribe a line across the the pinion, nut, and yoke before you do anything else. Remove the nut and yoke, and replace the seal. Just a small shim. Turned out that 0.135 worked out to be the right size. First i made a bigger one 0.190 on the lathe. Installed it and tighten the pinion nut to torque. Measured the end play of the now loose pinion with dial indicator. Subtract this measurement from the 0.190 -0.055 = 0.135.

The proper way to do it is to replace the crush sleeve. Now, I have rebuilt lots of rear diffs and front ones too. If it was mine, I would measure the rotational torque with and inch pound torque wrench as well as making a mark on the pinion nut and another on the yoke.

You need a really hard hitting impact wrench with a really big compressor to get it done, and most of us don't have that luxury at home. This is my solution:
Web21 feb. 2012 · Here is the seal the previous mechanic installed.You have to look at the gap between the flange and housing. Usually it's about .125" but that can vary. Hitting it home will distort it and leaving too high the yoke will hit the flange as on this one.
