The ideal plants for these areas are those known to do well in dry shade. Lilyturf is one such plant, a grasslike perennial that grows 9 to 18 inches high. WebI've found lots of things do surprisingly well in shade, though if they can get a bit of light at some point in the day it does help a lot. Camellias will thrive in a north-facing aspect, as will rhododendrons and azaleas. Some roses will do well - I have St Swithun and another David Austin climber (can't remember the name) on a north facing fence.
