At one point we had an f/1.7 on my Dad's ME, and an f/2.0 on my MG, and frankly I couldn't tell them appart. In theory the f/1.7 is better optically (and I think the faster lenses they did were better still) but in practice, pretty darn hard to tell.

People claim that the 1.7 is better wide open, which is only true in terms of contrast. Contrast is low on the 1.4 lens, but resolution is still okay.
