In one way I respect it's a safety issue and this is a clear demonstration of what can happen in such heavy rain. The race was won by Jordan driver Damon Hill. This race marked the first victory of the Irish team in 126 starts. Heading into the 13th round of the season, Mika Häkkinen led the championship with 77 points. Michael Schumacher was in second place, seven points behind. Häkkinen's teammate David Coulthard was in third position on 48 points, making these three the only drivers who could mathematically win the title.
