The liquid alcohol acted as a carrier that carried the powdered graphite down inside the cable where you could never get it there any other way. Be aware it will be a very messy job especially with graphite powder, that stuff gets everywhere it ain't supposed to. I have seen/used a teflon powder lubricant that comes in a small plastic tube with excellent results. It's much cleaner than graphite. That would be my choice. Also, lg will not collect dust/trash like other oils/grease. It's not that expensive. Take the cable loose at the speedo and let it slowly dribble down the inside of the housing.
